And Man Created Dog

Posted by: Luke Pfeifle

Mental Floss alerted me to the National Geographic special And Man Created Dog. I'd love to see it, but the site is worth visiting all by itself. Great info and even a fun quiz that tells you what breed you're most similar to. I got beagle. Go figure.

A Few Links Before the Weekend

Posted by: Luke Pfeifle

I don't know about you, but I'm ready for the weekend. Beautiful, sunny weather here in Maine right now. And I'm definitely happy I was not on the road this morning, particularly 93, where a dog got caught on the highway.

Also from the Globe, a nice mention of a girl who helped a police dog get a bullet-proof vest.

So many great stories about life-saving dogs on the intertubes these days! Check out this one, about a dog who chewed off his owner's toe - and that was a good thing. Be sure to read to the end!

Gina

Posted by: Luke Pfeifle

I had to share this article from the Huffington Post about a bomb-sniffing dog back from Irag with PTSD. Much like servicemen who return home and benefit from services provided by Puppies Behind Bars, this dog is on the mend thanks to human handlers. We don't often think of dogs being traumatized this way. It's a sad story, but worth reading.

Beyond Pet Products

Posted by: Luke Pfeifle

Catching up on old articles, like this one from the New York Times about how people are now sometimes designing their houses around their pets. Pretty interesting. Shows the extent people will go to make their pets happy - way beyond buying, say, a squeaker toy - but at least they're still buying the squeaker toys, too.

Plus One

Posted by: Luke Pfeifle

Wow, I feel so behind the times. I'd never heard of "yappy hours" or "bark mitzvahs" until I read this article. It seems timely in the midst of wedding season, too.

In Vogue

Posted by: Luke Pfeifle

My kids are old enough now (thank god) that I don't need to sign up the email newsletter for Daily Candy Kids (nor is it really my style, ahem), but my daughter alerted me to today's "deal":

Today's Deals!
Wag the Dog

All proceeds from this lapel pin ($10) benefit Dog Tags, an initiative of Puppies Behind Bars. Trained dogs are matched with Iraq and Afghanistan veterans who are physically injured or suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder.

The lapel pin is design Michael Bierut, who seems like a big deal. (I guess I need to run out and rent Helvetica. But what I really like about it, of course, is that the sales benefit PBB

Pretty cool.

Watching What They Eat

Posted by: Luke Pfeifle

An article published a few days ago in the New York Times looks at pet food and how we feed our dogs and cats.

"In fact, too often pets are overindulged, with too much food and too many snacks in proportion to the exercise they get. Veterinary groups have estimated that 20 to 60 percent of American dogs and cats are overweight or obese and at risk of developing heart disease, high blood pressure and Type 2 diabetes."

Two experts look at the ingredients in a range of pet foods and come to some interesting conclusions.

"Of course, in much of the world, domestic dogs and cats survive on table and street scraps, not commercially produced pet foods. In seeking evidence for the added value to health and longevity of commercial pet foods, the authors found almost none with any validity."

Worth checking out.

It's King James Everywhere You Look

Posted by: Luke Pfeifle

My vacation was lovely, thanks for asking.

Lots of news to catch up on...religious services for dogs seems as good a place to start as any. Do you think your dog is going to heaven anyway, or is prayer necessary? Heady stuff for a Tuesday when the Celtics are on...(Go Celtics!)

Iditarod 2010

Posted by: Luke Pfeifle

The 2010 Iditarod ended on Saturday night, when the last competitor crossed the finish line. There are lots of good stories to come out of this year's race, I'm sure, but the biggest one will be that Lance Mackey and his team won for the fourth time in a row - the first time in the race's 38-year history someone has won that many times consecutively. Impressive.

Rambo the French Bulldog

Posted by: Luke Pfeifle

(Image)

It's hard not to like Olympic gold medalist Shaun White, even harder not to like his French Bulldog, Rambo. People magazine's pet site has a profile of the pair:

"Rambo has good reason to be sacked out in the sun. Like his famous owner who is in the midst of a global media blitz since winning his gold medal in the half pipe, these past few weeks have been hectic times for the laidback hound. No sooner did Rambo catch his breath after returning home from Vancouver where he helped cheer ... er, howl, his 23-year-old owner to victory, but now he’s road-tripping around Southern California, accompanying White as he travels from one photo-shoot to the next."

(Image)

You can also find Rambo on the front of a T-shirt White and his brother designed for Target.
